Key Differences Between Structuralism and Post-Structuralism

  1. Origins:

    • Structuralism: Comes from linguistics, which is confident about finding objective truths. It believes that by observing and collecting data, we can make logical deductions and understand the world reliably.
    • Post-Structuralism: Comes from philosophy, which is more skeptical about knowing anything for sure. Famous philosophers like Nietzsche said, "There are no facts, only interpretations." Post-structuralists inherit this skepticism and question the confidence in scientific methods, often enjoying the irony of being sure that we can't be sure of anything.
  2. Tone and Style:

    • Structuralism: Uses abstract and general language with a cool, scientific tone. The writing is methodical and neutral, much like scientific essays, with clear steps and sometimes diagrams.
    • Post-Structuralism: Has a more emotional, urgent, and flashy style. The writing often includes puns, wordplay, and focuses on the material aspects of language, like metaphors or word origins. It aims for an engaged, warm style rather than a detached, cool one.
  3. Attitude to Language:

    • Structuralism: Accepts that language shapes our world and decides to work within that system. It believes that language is orderly, so we can still use it to understand things without despair.
    • Post-Structuralism: Takes the idea further, suggesting that reality itself is made of text. It sees language as unpredictable and constantly changing, leading to anxiety about whether we can ever truly know anything through language. Words' meanings are always shifting and never pure, often contaminated by their opposites or historical uses.
  4. Project (Aims):

    • Structuralism: Questions how we structure and categorize reality, encouraging us to break free from habitual perceptions to get a more reliable view of things.
    • Post-Structuralism: Distrusts reason and the idea of humans as independent beings. It believes individuals are products of social and linguistic forces, not fixed essences. This skepticism undermines the intellectual foundations of Western civilization.
